Tearful Christmas

“If only he is here, this preparation would be filled with live”, looking towards Thaye she continued, “Don’t worry baby, you will definitely see your father one day. He will come for you and me”. She spoke as if it’s baby who was worried”

Deki had celebrated her son’s birthday without his father in Phuntsholing, having not found Jangchub after a long search. She had limited vacation from the Hotel Manager and she had to leave for Thimphu the other day.

More than three months now, everyone in Thimphu were getting ready for the cold winter. Moreover, people are crazy about the Christmas that was coming. Deki was one of them trying to come up with the best possible way to celebrate it with Thaye. She had never celebrated the Christmas before but heard of it several times when she was in Bumthang. She just had idea that it do have relationship to snow that she had seen throughout her life every winter. She really didn’t know what it actually was.

Having been in Thimphu for past two years, she had noticed what people usually do on Christmas. She had watched several English movie about it. She was happy to celebrate it for the first time with all those little eye experiences.

While Christmas was one good occasion to celebrate the success and joy of the year, Deki could not forget the day Jangchub walked away from her. Each time when she looked into Thaye’s eye, she remembered him which took her back in time where she had beautiful laughter and smile most of the time. Jangchub had never turned up for Thaye’s birthday in September and he didn’t tell her where he was but that didn’t frustrate Deki. His monthly deposit to Deki’s bank account showed that he lived somewhere far away but he cared about her and the child.

How can she forget him when his presence was always felt? He was just beside her every time. In the bedroom, sitting room and kitchen, he was vividly talking and smiling to her. She realized the intense love within her heart for Jangchub. His love and care in the hospital, his comforting words, his gentle touch and kiss oh her cheek, all kept her drowned into the fragrance of those memories.

Most often she blamed her own fate for letting her fiancée go away. Though he might have left her, he didn’t left her in a pathetic condition. He gave her job to earn and additionally sent some amount of his own salary. His son was growing faster and resembled him closely. So why the hell would he be forgotten so easily. Deki hoped for the better days ahead. ‘He will come back one day’, she believed strongly.

It’s 12:00 midnight on December 25th. Thimphu was still cold and breezy. Deki walked out on the balcony and looked outside towards the main town and the memorial Chorten. Bhutanese are not Christian but the Christmas had become more like a global festival than for the Christian. Bhutan is not an exception too. The City was filled with the fragrance of Christmas and every shop got some beautiful Christmas stuffs. It’s a business for them. The beautiful view downtown from Motithang from her balcony revealed everything that Christmas is everywhere.

Deki had completed with the preparation the previous day. Her sitting room had one huge Christmas tree adorned with colorful led light. Balloons on the walls, Santa standing right beside the entrance, chocolates and biscuits scattered on the table, Deki really wanted to celebrate the day even if she didn’t have any childhood connection to the day.

However, sadness overflowed her mind and heart for she didn’t have the most beloved heart she once had. She missed Jangchub. “If only he is here, this preparation would be filled with live”, looking towards Thaye she continued, “Don’t worry baby, you will definitely see your father one day. He will come for you and me”. She spoke as if it’s baby who was worried. Her cheek was drenched in tears while she kept on talking to her angel. So the Christmas Day was well prepared but it was like a time to pour out all her sorrows on Thaye.

The baby who knew nothing of what was being talked and why his mom was crying, watched her carefully as if he was a statue. May be he knew something than nothing…
